“The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch”
The Multimedia library of the project “The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” is a collection of multimedia programs and films as well as games and educational programs which are united by one software based interface. This interface is developed on the basis of Adobe Flash, which is a special software environment, that renders Multimedia library and controls the process of search, selection and starting of electronic resources. The Multimedia library of the virtual branch is intended to be downloaded onto personal computers in equipped rooms and lets visitors explore the multimedia programs on Russian art. The materials of the virtual branch, as its 10-year practice have already shown, are successfully used in educational and entertaining activities both of museums and different institutions of education, culture and science among which are schools, centres of information technology, libraries, institutions and universities, research institutions, houses of culture, rehabilitation centres etc. Different resources of the Multimedia library are easily integrated into the educational process.
“The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” is an innovative international project of the Russian Museum, that in the conditions of universal globalisation reflects the tendency of society towards openness, correlation and integration. Using the possibilities afforded by modern means of communications and new computer technology the Russian Museum has become an initiator and coordinator, forming a new cultural and information environment that widens the spheres of application of scientific and educational programs for spreading knowledge of the history of Russian culture and art. Creation of a network of information and educational centres “The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” has become the realisation of this goal. Among the main features of the project are accessibility for a wider audience to the enormous cultural heritage of Russia and the scientific potential of one of the largest museums in the world, as well as mobility of getting information and the possibility to overcome borders between countries and to establish friendly relations with neighbours on the basis of developing cultural and scientific contacts. Since the project “The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” has been developing it has gained public acknowledgement and authoritative support at the highest level. In March 2012 the Prime-minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the Minister of Culture, Alexander Avdeev, declared that it would be necessary to help to Russian museums to create the same virtual program that the Russian Museum had (publication of RIANOVOSTI). In April 2012 at a meeting with representatives of the museum community in Saratov Vladimir Putin said that “the Virtual Russian Museum is a really big, grand project. You know, I myself have fairly often been to the Russian Museum and now I am using your virtual possibilities, with pleasure exploring the virtual environment (publication of Radio The Voice of Russia). Organisation of the virtual branches of the Russian Museum in different towns of Russia and abroad, for which a set of multimedia programs on Russian art is supplied and downloaded on the equipment of some institution, is very popular at the moment. However the project has been developing and responding keenly to the modern progress of technology and aspirations of society. In the first place this evolution concerns providing information on the Internet. One of the new forms of development has become the project “The Russian Museum. The Augmented Reality” which is creation of the content for applications for mobile phones. It has been realised on the initiative and with the financial support by the sponsors of the museum – Joint-Stock Financial Corporation “Sistema” and Joint Stock Company “Mobile TeleSystems”. At the moment the project has been transformed into the mobile web-site “The Russian Museum. The Augmented Reality” (www.rmgallery.ru). The advantages of this mobile web-site are firstly accessibility for the users of all mobile devices without installing any software, the only condition being access to the Internet and secondly a possibility to get information about the museum’s complex and the objects both at the exposition and at any place of the world. It could be used by those who are planning their visit to the Russian Museum in advance. The other form of providing information on Russian art in the framework of the project “The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” is the Virtual Lecture hall which is open in the Multimedia Centre of the Russian Museum. With the help of equipment for videoconferences developed especially for the Russian Museum, and supplied thanks to the sponsor’s support to the many virtual branches in different towns of Russia, broadcasting of online lectures on Russian art has started. The lectures are being given by leading research fellows of the Russian Museum. The Lecture hall is intended to be involved in the global project of the Museum “The Electronic Russian Museum”. The lecturer will be able to use during his talk the images of works of art from the collection of the Russian Museum scanned at high resolution. The prospective of further development of the virtual branch of the Russian Museum is downloading of the material on the Internet and distance maintenance of users. At present the most important tasks of the project are work on updating the Mediateka which has been recently developed on the other software platform with a user-friendly interface and equipped with search option as well as creation of new programs presenting as usual quality content but designed on a new technological level
