The State Russian museum was founded in Saint-Petersburg on the decree of Emperor Nicholas II in 1895 and was solemnly open for vistors on March 7 (19) of 1898. It was the first state museum of Russian fine art in Russia. In 1992 Decree of president of Russian Federation the museum was claimed as specially valuable object of cultural heritage of Russian peoples. Primarily museum was located in the halls of Mikhailovsky palace. Today there are also Stroganov and Marble palaces, Mikhailovsky (Engineers’) Castle and Mikhailovsky Garden included into museum complex. There have been Summer Garden and Summer Palace of Peter I along with the first memorial musuem in Russia founded by the will of Peter I – House of Peter I. Thus in the beginning of 21 century in the historic center of Saint-Petersburg there has been unique museum complex gathered. It has an opportunity to get its visitors aquainted not only with the history of the Russian fine art development, but also Russian architecture and landscape art developed through 300 years. Uniqueness of the Russian museum’s collection is defined by the time period covered – from 10th century till present – as well as by the representation of almost all the types and genres of fine art that reflect various phenomena of Russian artistic life of different areas. The Russian museum is a trusted scientific and research center, is also recognized as famous restoration center, one of the biggest centers of cultural-enlightening work all around Russia. The museum is also functioning as a scientific-methodical center for art museums of Russian Federation.
