Victor Vasnetsov (1848–1926) imparted great importance to his work for the church and attempted to resurrect the old style of icon-painting by closely following the traditions of Old Russian and Byzantine art. Between 1883 and 1901, Victor Vasnetsov created a series of designs and then original oil paintings of mosaics for the facades of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in St Petersburg The artist also designed two icons - The Mother of God and Infant Jesus and The Saviour (1901) - for the local tier of the main iconostasis.

In 1903, Leonty Benois built a Russian Orthodox church in Darmstadt, Germany, after the motifs of seventeenth century chapels in Yaroslavl and Rostov. Victor Vasnetsov designed an altar image of the Mother of God and an icon of Mary Magdalene (1901) for the main pediment. In 1907 Vasnetsov created original for a mosaic "Fatherhood" for the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Warsaw.
