Bedroom of Peter the Great
Bedroom of Peter the GreatThe walls are upholstered in crimson velvet recreated after the samples of the early 18th century. The ceiling is decorated with a picturesque plafond – The Triumph of Morpheus, created in the early 18th century by an unknown artist. It shows Morpheus with a bunch of poppy glomes, Night, his assistant, and the figure of the fading Day. The ceiling modelling is reconstructed after the drawing in the Sea Cabinet in the Monplaisir Palace (Peterhof). The room is equipped with a fireplace (an innovation brought by Peter the Great from Europe). The draft hood is decorated with A Boy on a Dolphin relief supposedly created after the drawing by Andreas Schlüter, a German architect and sculptor, who contributed to decoration of the interiors and façades of the palace (the bas-relief above the entrance was created by Andreas Schlüter). |
